The air around us can carry many contaminants, such as dust, dirt, exhaust soot and major allergens. Your car’s cabin air filter keeps these contaminants from entering the passenger compartment, so you only breathe in fresh air. Over time, however, the cabin air filter will fill up with dirt and contaminants and no longer do its job. If your A/C system is not as efficient as it used to be or you get an unpleasant odor from your vents, it might be time to change your cabin air filter.

Step 1: Prepare your vehicle and work area
- Gather tools and parts.
- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Pop front compartment area (aka “frunk”).
Step 2: Access the cabin air filter
- Remove plastic battery cover by loosening two plastic twist fasteners.
- Remove adjacent, passenger side plastic piece by simply pulling up; the cabin air filter should now be visible.
Step 3: Replace the cabin air filter
- Depending on your vehicle, you might see a metal bracket in front of the cabin air filter; if you do, remove this by loosening 4x T30 Torx screws.
- You may also see a wire directly in front of the cabin air filter; if it gets in the way, disconnect it.
- Undo the plastic retaining clip that holds the cabin air filter in place by sliding it over towards the driver’s side.
- Remove the old cabin air filter and replace it with the new one.
